Waterhaul
Waterhaul transforms the fishing industry’s most persistent waste problem into exceptional eyewear designed to last a lifetime.
Founded in 2018 by Cornish marine biologist Harry Dennis, the Newquay-based social enterprise collects abandoned fishing nets and lines and transforms them into premium sunglasses.
Through beach cleanups and direct collection at partner harbors, the ghost-gear plastics are brought in-house to be mechanically recycled. Paired with scratch-resistant Barberini mineral glass lenses from Italy and engineered specifically for harsh coastal environments, these are sunglasses to outlast conventional eyewear.
Highlights
- Ocean-Rescued Materials: Made from zero virgin plastic, all frames are crafted from traceable 100% ghost fishing gear, abandoned nets and lines that would persist in the ocean for up to 500 years.
- Exceptional Optics: Ultra-thin 1.8mm Barberini mineral glass lenses from Italy deliver superior scratch resistance, Abbe 59 clarity and complete UVA/UVB 400 protection, while remaining fully recyclable alongside the frames.
- Marine-Grade Engineering: Designed specifically for coastal environments with five-barrel stainless steel hinges and color-stable matte finishes that resist corrosion, salt spray, and UV degradation.
- Circular Lifecycle: Revolutionary “Recycle & Replace” lifetime warranty returns broken frames to Waterhaul’s workshop where they’re pelletized, remolded, and replaced without charge, creating an infinite materials loop.

Outstanding Construction & Responsible Manufacture
Waterhaul eyewear features thoughtful engineering details that address the traditional failure points of conventional sunglasses. Ultra-durable five-barrel stainless steel hinges eliminate the common weakness of plastic spring clips, while the matte-textured finish, available in the nets’ natural Slate grey or Sea green hues, resists both UV fading and salt corrosion.
The deliberate absence of decorative paints or coatings ensures nothing can chip or peel. This careful construction emerges from a condensed geographic footprint, with the entire production cycle contained within Europe and final assembly in the UK, keeping transportation emissions low.
Exceptional Aftercare
Through their “Recycle & Replace“, Waterhaul’s lifetime frame warranty creates a materials loop where damaged frames can be returned to Newquay to be ground back into feedstock and emerge as fresh eyewear, free of charge to the customer.
The innovative heat-mouldable property of the frames enables wearers to fine-tune fit at home, while a 30-day “try-me-on-at-home” policy with free UK returns removes sizing anxiety.
Timeless Design
Waterhaul adds storytelling elements to connect wearers to the origins of their eyewear. Laser-etched coordinates inside each temple record the exact location where the ghost gear was recovered, creating a tangible link to specific marine conservation efforts.
Limited edition releases, such as the Whale Rescue blue frames created in collaboration with the World Cetacean Alliance, transform specific recovery operations into wearable conversation pieces.
